When St. Paul’s opens their regular season on Friday against Landon the Crusaders will be led by alum Trey Whitty.
This will be the first time since 2006 that the Crusaders will have a new coach after Rick Brocato retired last season.
St. Paul’s hasn’t won the MIAA A conference championship since 2010 and the Crusaders haven’t been in the title game in four years. And it has been since 2015 that St. Paul’s has beaten arch rival, Boys’ Latin.
Bringing Whitty on as head coach, St. Paul’s hopes to return to their winning ways. The Crusaders have a strong upper class group that’s determined to end the 2018 season on top of the conference with the title.
The defense should be solid for St. Paul’s. Whitty will be calling on sophomore Jamie Grant to step up at the goalie position. But the question will be, and it has been for the past several seasons for the Crusaders is, what will the identity of the offense be and will Whitty have enough quality depth? St. Paul’s has always had talented players at each position in the past. But there was a definite drop off between the starting group and the bench guys. It appears Whitty has a solid group on varsity and will be able to win when it matters this season in the conference.
Besides playing Landon, St. Paul’s has a solid out of conference schedule as they will play top teams from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Plus a date against public school powerhouse, Fallston.

“We should be solid at the defensive end as we return most of our top poles, and we believe we have found some good D-mids. Sophomore Jamie Grant will take over in the cage. The pieces are there for us to have a strong year, we just need to hone in on our identity at the offensive end of the field.” Trey Whitty
